Battle of the giants
The pecking order changes when you’re croc out of water
As this picture illustrates ,desperate times can lead to desperate behaviour.
In this case, the desperate time was a drought in India’s Ranthambore National Park, where by the end of June 2003 there had been no rain to speak of for three and a half years .Rivers and lakes weer low the marshes were drying out and the crocodiles were very bad shape
Some had even begun abandoning the marshes altogether
And ,in the hest of the day ,taking shelter in the deep ,dark chambers of the many temples scattered around Ranthambore. Others ,Perhaps too dehydrated and starved to very far, simply lay on the open ground ,waiting for night –or ,better yet ,rain –-to come .
According to Murlidher Parashar ,the tiger artist who took this picture ,there was also tension between the Park’s two top predators –animals that normally wouldn’t be inclined to cross each other-the crocodiles and the tigress.
A few days earlier, this tigress had caught a sambar deer and ,as tigresses often do,had left it while she went to fetch her cubs. She was only gone a short while, but when she got back,a group of crocs had all but finished eating her prey.
So, whether it was pique or simply coincidence and opportunism, the next time she came across a suffering crocodile, a 12-foot-long one, she attacked. The fight, says Parashar, lasted an hour and a half, whit the tigress holding down the croc’s tail while she tried to reach its neck and deliver a killing bite.
And she finally did ,her strong bite ripping out its shoulder. Says Parashar,”It was the first time in my life that I’d seen a tigress attack, much less kill, a big crocodile”
